(W1) So called from the prebendal manor of Toten-Hall at its north-west extremity, which was the ancient court-house of that manor, and subsequently a place of public amusement, tea-gardens, etc. (Reference: Timbs's Curiosities of London, p. 18) On the west side is the chapel in which George Whitefield, the founder of the Methodists, used to preach.
