City, 4A, Cheapside (EC4) This famous street is said to have received its name from persons who formerly sold Paternosters (or the Lord's Prayer) , beads, rosaries, etc., during the ages of superstition and as it was in the way to St. Paul's Cathedral, the devout of all descriptions might here supply themselves with these articles. Paternoster Row later became famous for mercers, lace-men, haberdashers, and other trades; but ever since 1724 the book-selling business has been increasing in "the Row."
