Houndsditch

City (E1) "From Aldgate north-west to Bishopsgate lieth the ditch of the City called Houndsditch, for that in old time, when the same lay open, much filth (conveyed from the City) , especially dead dogs, were laid there or cast." (Reference: Kingsford's Stow, vol. I, p. 128) Houndsditch was first paved in 1503. This is the centre of the Jews' quarter. (Reference: Timbs's Curiosities of London, p. 443)
