City, West Smithfield (EC1) Was anciently called Gilt Spurre or Knightrider's Street, because of the knights who in quality of their honour wore gilt spurs, and who, with others, rode that way to the tournaments and other feats of arms used in Smithfield. (Reference: Strype's Stow, Bk. in, p. 231) The same derivation apparently applies to the present Knightrider Street.
