At No. 16 lived the distinguished physician Sir Henry Halford. (Reference: Jesse's London, vol 1, p. 37) Smollett lodged here in 1746. Lord Beaconsfield died here at No. Thackeray's "Becky Sharp" and "Colonel Rawdon Crawley "came to No. 201 after the Waterloo Campaign. This is the house where "Lord Steyne" made love to "Becky," with the result described in Vanity Fair. At No. 8 (still standing) lived the Misses Berry, the friends of Horace Walpole. Thackeray was a frequent visitor at No. 8.
