A review of St Mary's Hospital by Noel Long written on Friday 24th of October 2008
About ten days ago, I collapsed in a busy London street, hit my head on the pavement and knocked myself unconscious. I was apparently having some kind of seizure as a result of alcohol withdrawal although I didn't know this at the time, largely due to the fact that I was unconscious.
An ambulance arrived shortly afterwards and took me to St Mary's. The wound on my head was dressed immediately, and I was taken shortly afterward for a CAT scan, blood test and chest X-ray. I was then moved to Douglas Ward and spent the night with various drips and blood pressure monitors having out of my arms.
I spent the next three days in Douglas Ward where the staff were excellent. I would particularly like to mention three nurses - Anastasia (Australia), Rowena (Philippines) and Des (Ireland) - who were particularly sympathetic and attentive.
After three days in Douglas, I was shifted to Lilian Holland Ward where, again, the staff were very good but the facilities were much more basic than those in Douglas - its Victorian past is still very much in evidence. Nevertheless, the level of care was very good.
I was very satisfied with the level of service I received during my stay at St Mary's although I don't think that patients should have to pay to watch TV on "Patientline" - even prisoners are allowed free TV! I am currently unemployed and would be very interested in working at St Mary's as an orderly or in some similar capacity. I also have a lot of office experience so I would also be interested in some kind of office position - anything considered.
Keep up the good work!.
