A review of J T Morgan by Rosemary Grom written on Friday 2nd of May 2008
Millions of old buttons, mostly from the inter-war years, are stacked up all over the place in this nooky workshop in an old railway arch near White City tube, although it's actually underneath the Hammersmith & City Line up an alley way that runs between the back of the BBC & Shepherds Bush tube station. The proprietor actually makes covered buutons himself so you can specify special positioning on motifs in your fabric if you want to. He's also a Master Tailor & cuts patterns both for private individuals & some of the leading young designers, although he is so discreet he won't tell you who he's cutting for at the moment (no need for 'confidentiallity clauses' as he's rather old-fashioned like that). He does loads of alterations, especially the sort dry-cleaners won't do, such as remodelling jackets or overcoats, which he will even let-out if it's at all possible! Apparrently he used to own the oldest shop in Notting Hill untill the year 2000 when the landlords changed!--And his stock looks like it: mother-o'-pearl shirt buttons in boxes of 'a great-gross' as he calls it (he's very keen on old measures etc -- it's nearly 2000 buttons); fancy tassells; old braids; strange specialist needles for upholsterers; old & new ribbons; etc, etc. From a limited range of 81 fabrics he does suits made to measure for £450 which take only 6 weeks. Also, if he doesn't have, do, or sell what you want he'll willingly you refer you to the right source. Go & explore his premises while you still can as craftsmen like him are in limited supply..
