A review of City Snacks by Anonymous written on Thursday 20th of September 2007
I work on High Holborn and have tried a number of the local eateries for lunchtime sandwiches. There is a wide selection and some are of high quality however City Snacks is by far the best I’ve had.
It may look like your average Italian from the outside, but venture in and you will witness a true celebration and love of all things Italian. The few intimate tables are surrounded by a collection of film posters boasting the best of American Italian talent and alongside these are draped the obligatory Lavazza coffee posters. However some of the more unusual items include Bialetti coffe makers (presumably for sale as they have price stickers on them) and other Italian branded kitchenalia. Crammed onto numerous shelves in the main area are all manner of preserved goodies in glass jars, they even have empty panattoni tins and cheese boxes suspended from the ceiling! The main menu boards have been lovingly hand painted in simple white paint on small black boards and give a tantalising glimpse of the fare on offer. However the main even is in the stainless steel and glass counter below.
There is wide range of filings including what you normally expect from a standard Italian sandwich shop. However they also hold a number of truly fantastic concoctions which are prepared daily and bursting with subtle flavours. The combinations are multilayered and in perfect balance so much so that you continue to enjoy and discover flavours even after you have finished the last bite. Examples include: Genovese Chicken, Salt beef mustard and dill, Chicken pesto and avocado and peperadoo chicken. Al these and more can be had with ciabatta, focaccia, roll or baguette, and of course extra toppings/salad and toasting is also available. My personal favourite is Tuna Parmigiana in a sun dried tomato focaccia - toasted.
Everything is run by three men behind the counter (a father and two sons possibly) and two female waitresses. They are all fantastically polite, attentive and efficient. The care they take of you as a customer is reflected in the quality and attention to detail of their establishment.
In short, check it out and see what you can discover for yourself. I’m in love with the place already and I’ve only got so far as the sandwiches – there’s a whole world of pasta dishes and sweets still to discover!
