A review of Shadwell Basin by Highway boys1947 written on Friday 21st of November 2014
After the war a captured german u boat was displayed in Shadwell basin 100 yards from my home our gang of dead end kids spent hours looking over the sub. Also the 4 master sailing ship PAMIR was berthed here and again hours were spent climbing over the decks. The PAMIR was later a training ship for cadets(german)and later was sunk in a storm in the Atlantic.St,pauls church(the captains church) is in the background and usa president Jefferson's mother is buried there.Capt Cook lived and worshipped there. This church was also used as a shelter from bombs when the other shelters were full(in the crypt)A german bomber caught in the searchlight was hit by aa guns in king Edwards park and nearly hit the church spire on its way down. There are tunnels under glamis road from cable street down to the basin used for smuggling out of the docks..
