A review of Galtymore Dance Club by Bob McGrath written on Tuesday 25th of September 2012
I arrived in London in May 1960 and got digs in Kensal Rise. My first visit to the Galtymore was
on a Sunday in June 1960 following a visit to the
famous Crown on the same night. The Irish certainly
were all over Cricklewood in those days. I got a job in Rolls Razor and many of my generation also worked in Smiths Clocks. The majority of Irish though worked
in construction. The Cricklewood Hotel was also a famous haunt of many Irish and there was a small
dance hall upstairs there. It was a great time to be
in London with plenty of jobs available to all. I
met my wife in the Galtymore , a Donegal woman.
I returned to Ireland five years ago and now live in Donegal.
Recently, I revisited London and Cricklewood and was
sad to see the many changes there and no sign of
the famous Galtymore. In place of the Irish accents
you now have Eastern European and African. In the
pubs there are still a few elderly Irish, but no
younger Irish at all. .
