A review of Percy Ingle Bakeries Ltd by DENIS S TITMUS written on Thursday 23rd of August 2012
February 1970, the start of my career as a pastry cook at Percy Ingles factory lammas road leyton. I was a green 15 year old boy but that man and his staff inspired me, whilst he had his double fronted shop in hackney percy was reputed to be the best Pastry cook in London, the millers saw the opportunity to sell more flour and helped Percy open a factory supplying east london with his famous cakes etc.this man was a genius all the celebration cakes were his own design, i was ( and still am ) in awe of this man i remember him saying to me, Denis you want me to make you the best in London?, like this son.I have been in this trade for 42 years now and all i can say is that the bigger a company gets the more machinery becomes involved and you lose that certain something in your product, also the price of our raw materials keep going up and up and unfortunately this is passed onto the consumer ( not only in our trade) only last week our Flour prices were increased by £80 per ton, which for a small baker like ourselves = £100 per day!, to try to use flours equal to the quality that we had 40 years ago is difficult also, For me and i think many others Percy will always be the best his products will always reign supremely over his competitors .
