A review of Gioberti by NowineLinda written on Saturday 14th of March 2009
Went to Gioberti's for the first time last night. Had booked a table for a party of 6 and from the offset found that the waitress serving us was very rude. Initially, it felt as though we were being rushed and were asked for our choices for starters and mains. We asked for more time. Then when ordering our Spanish freind asked for lasagne the waitress said 'translation needed'. I 'translated' for her and repeated Lasagne please. I must just point out that the waitress was from Eastern/Central Europe anyhow. Secondly, when a member of our party asked for her Steak dish to be free from the red wine sauce(she could not drink due to medication) the waitress said what's wrong - are you driving?, 'No' well what then you have already got a bottle of wine on the table'. To which my friend replied - well I am not drinking it and I would rather not have the red wine sauce - the waitress said 'Hmmm well why not' My friend retorted 'There isn't going to be a problem, is there?' in a rather firm way and the waitress took that as her cue to leave.
Now if that was all that happened you might wonder at why I have taken the time to comment. However, the food arrived a very basic mixture of pasta and fish/meat. Nothing particulary interesting and also small portion sizes equalling £40 per head.
Our plates were cleared whilst members of the party were still eating and as soon as all had finished their main we were given the dessert menu. After asking for a small amount of time 2 MINUTES later another waiter appeared with the menus. Feeling as though we weren't really up for a friday night argument we ordered some desserts. My partner ordered a Cassata and it was frozen solid - my friend ordered a Chocolate Tart and it was stale and dry. We were just about to order a liquer determined that the food and service not ruin our eveneing when the waiter appeared and said 'If you don't mind we are closing the till'. This was 11pm. We had arrived for our table at 9.15pm.
We eat out regularly and are well versed in basic good italian restaurants - this is one to avoid..
