A review of The Cavalier by Cavalier fan written on Sunday 15th of February 2009
This is the second time they have hosted a Valentine's Day meal and although last year's meal was lovely, this year's exceeded all expectations.
Seven wonderful courses, great service and good wine made for a memorable evening. On arrival, we were given a raspberry bellini, served with a selection of generous canapes, including toppings of smoked salmon and guacamlole with just the right amount of chilli to notice. Starter was a shell fish medley, with pan-seared scallops topped with black truffle, sauteed tiger prawns and steamed clams served with sweet chilli and garlic creme fraich plus fresh assorted bread. This was wonderful and my husband was delighted with the liquor served around the clams.
We were then served a champange and passion fruit granite, which was just right and was very refreshing.
Mains were either Roast Pheasant or Pan Fried Sea Bass fillet, which we chose but the pheasant looked lovely. The fish was so easy to eat and was served on ribbons of steamed courgettes, carrots and turnip, which turned out to be a very tasty accompaniment to the fish and the Chateaux potatoes. The whole was accompanied by a dill cream sauce.
Then follows Strawberries and Dark Chocolate to dip them in. This was a real treat and I thought is was dessert but that turned out not to be the case.
A dessert called the Raspberry Love Well followed, consisting of paper thin short pastry, topped with pipings of choux pastry and the hole in the centre filled with a wonderful creamy, raspberry concoction. That man surely is a genius with pastry. In over 40 years of dining out, I have never tasted anything like it. Beautiful, light and memorable to say the least.
We finished off with coffee/mint tea and homemade Chocolate Truffles, which provided a lovely end to a great meal.
Our bill was £32.50 each plus wine. The wine selection is ranged from £10.50 to around £30.00 depending on what they have in stock.
Although we are regular diners at the Cavalier, we have nothing else to do with the pub and wish them a long and successful business - they certainly deserve it..
