Buzzing atmosphere, charming Victorian décor, top nosh, good value wine, friendly staff - this transformed backstreet boozer ticks all the boxes of a genuine gastropub. A solid, seasonal, Modern European menu is served up by unfailingly charming staff at both lunch and dinner. Starters may include a smooth Smoked mackerel brandade with parsley salad, while a choice of around five mains features the likes of Old Spot pork chop with white beans, watercress and sherry vinegar. When it comes to puddings, a gold star most certainly goes to the dreamy chocolate brownie with coffee ice-cream. A separate bar menu offers an excellent line in satisfying munchies, fat olives, crispy pig’s ear, Arbroath smokies. A handful of tables outside encourage lazy summer afternoons.
