In a curious but probably fabulous part of folklore, the building of St. Mary Overie's Church in Southwark and the first London Bridge are attributed to the daughter of John Overs, who rented a ferry from the City across the Thames at this spot. He grew very rich and his wealth enabled his daughter to construct the church and the bridge, though Overs himself lost his life by his own covetousness.
