Londoners played an enormous role in the protection of their city. Many became members of the Home Guard, the Air Raid Precautions Service, the Auxiliary Fire Service, and so on.
Scouts became known as 'Blitz Scouts' as they guided fire engines to where they were most needed. Many unemployed were drafted into the Royal Army Pay Corps.
The Women's Voluntary Services organised the evacuation of children, established centres for those displaced by bombing, operated canteens, salvage and recycling schemes.
