Richer even in memories than the Old Palace is Westminster Hall, ever intimately associated with the history of England. In it was held the coronation feast given by Henry II. to his son and successor; here Edward III. received the Black Prince and his prisoner John of France, and here took place the first meetings of Parliament before its division into Lords and Commons.
The State trials were also held within the walls of Westminster Hall, as it was there that the great Chancellor More, Lady Jane Grey, the Earl of Strafford, Charles I., the seven bishops of the reign of James II, Warren Hastings, and many more illustrious prisoners were brought before the High Court of Justice.
