Royal Exchange (the)
Royal Exchange (the) The large building close to the Bank of England, facing Cheapside, was opened by Queen Victoria on the 28th October, 1844, and has a fine portico in the classic style, with a large sculpture at the top representing Commerce.
The first Exchange, on the same spot, was opened by Queen Elizabeth in 1571. The interior is a large covered courtyard, with a graceful statue of Queen Victoria in the early years of her reign. The panels of the walls are being filled with paintings showing different historical views connected with Commerce and Liberty by eminent artists. The following are already placed in position :. Admission inside the Royal Exchange daily from 9. 30 to 1. 30, and on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, until 3. 30. It is used by merchants to transact business, fix the rate of exchange.
